Portland is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maine, with a population of 67,067 as of 2017. The Greater Portland metropolitan area is home to over half a million people, more than one-third of Maine's total population.

The Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging provides many services and programs for seniors on a variety of issues, be they financial, medical, or personal. The primary ways in which the agency interacts with the community and maintains age-friendliness are as follows:

  1. Wellness and Nutrition Programs: The Healthy Aging Department at Southern Maine Agency on Aging helps older adults thrive and age in place by providing services that help individuals take charge of their health and well-being and maintain their independence.

  2. Resources and Support: Community Services provides the resources and support that older adults, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers need to sort through the many programs and services available that help individuals live independently and well into their senior years.

  3. Adult Day Centers: Our Adult Day Center provides a home-away-from-home experience for our members living with memory impairments including Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. The Center encompasses the latest in therapeutic approaches in person-centered care, providing a safe environment for members while encouraging socialization, healthy choices, and maximum independence.

Good community engagement. Public transit could be better. Scenic location near the beach. Good bars and restaurants.

This town has transportation for students (all around the bay). High school students are given a metro card by the schools—helping students become more independent. Grades eight and below ride school buses. We have parks, and trails along the ocean which is nice for students who do co-curricular activities (such as cross-country). There are also in person interpreters integrated in almost every service (medical, academic, etc) which makes it easier for immigrant parents to communicate with teachers.
