Hearing aid cost factors

To gain a better understanding of why hearing aids cost what they do, learn about the main factors that contribute to their overall price: Technology, Fit, and Aftercare.

Valuable tech features

Available in many shapes and sizes, today’s hearing aids are packed with features and functionality that not only improve your hearing but also offer additional benefits to your everyday life.

Today’s hearing aids can:

  • Be controlled via an app

  • Stream media audio and calls via Bluetooth

  • Remind you of important tasks

  • Send Fall Alerts to loved ones if you fall

  • Track health-related activity

  • Use artificial intelligence to translate other languages in real time

Getting the perfect fit

Hearing aids are generally not one-size-fits-all, both physically and functionally. To help ensure you’re fitted with the right hearing aids for your needs and that they’re properly adjusted to your level of hearing loss, it requires the help of a professionally licensed hearing provider.

A hearing provider will need to:

  • Perform an ear exam and hearing evaluation
  • Ask questions to help select the right hearing aids with the right features
  • Conduct follow-up visits to fine-tune hearing aid performance

Continuous support

Your hearing is always changing, so Start Hearing is always here to support you and the performance of your hearing aids far beyond the day you receive them.

Beyond day one with hearing aids, Start Hearing provides:

  • Unlimited support from our Hearing Care Advisors via live chat, phone, and email

  • Up to a 60-day risk free trial

  • Up to 3-year deluxe warranty with one-time loss and damage coverage per hearing aid*

  • Annual hearing consultations for you and your family

  • Up to 6 free office visits for one year

  • A free 3-year battery supply for battery-operated models**

Hearing aid payment options

Start Hearing believes everyone deserves the opportunity to benefit from hearing aids. Here are ways to pay for your hearing aids and return to a life rich in sound.

Private health insurance
Some private health insurance plans will cover the cost of a hearing test and a hearing aid evaluation and may fully or partially cover the cost of hearing aids. If you have health insurance but don’t know if any of these costs are covered, Start Hearing is happy to help you find out. Call at (888) 791-0106 !

Health Savings Account (HSA)
If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), which is a tax-advantaged medical savings account funded by untaxed dollars that accumulate year over year, you can use funds from this account for medical- and health care-related purchases not covered by insurance, including hearing aids.

Medicaid
While there are different eligibility requirements from state to state, most state Medicaid programs cover part, if not all, of the costs of hearing aids — and it’s a requirement for Medicaid to cover hearing aid costs for children.

Visit www.benefits.gov and select "Benefits by Category" and then select “Medicaid/Medicare” to better understand what your state Medicare plan offers.

State vocational rehabilitation programs
State vocational rehabilitation programs may offer financial assistance toward the purchase of hearing aids if they are required for your job. Find rehabilitation programs near you here .

Service organizations
If you’re a member of a fraternal or service organization, your organization may have a program that provides financial assistance to cover the cost of hearing aids.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
If you have a medical Flexible Spending Account (FSA) through your employer that lets you set aside a portion of your earnings on a pre-tax basis and use throughout the year for medical expenses not covered by your insurance provider, you can use those funds to help cover the cost of hearing aids.

Medicare
Normally, Medicare does not cover the cost of hearing aids or routine hearing evaluations, BUT Medicare Part B may cover exams ordered by your physician to be conducted by a licensed hearing professional. Additionally, Medicare Advantage Plans may provide coverage for hearing aids.

See if your state’s Medicare plan provides coverage for hearing aids and hearing exams.

Veteran benefits
According to VA.gov , if you are a veteran and are enrolled in a VA health care system, you are eligible for comprehensive audiology diagnostic evaluations. Specific eligibility rules apply to hearing aid services. For additional information, contact the VA health care facility near you .

Credit financing programs
To help you cover the cost of both hearing aids and hearing loss treatment, Start Hearing is proud to offer financing (with approved credit) through Wells Fargo Health Advantage® and CareCredit.

Charitable foundations
Some hearing aid manufacturers sponsor or participate in foundations that help provide hearing aids to those with limited financial resources.

Request an appointment with a provider

Take the next step: If you’re ready for an in-office visit, choose a date and time that works for you. Once you submit your request, a Hearing Care Advisor will contact you to assist with scheduling your appointment with a Start Hearing professional in your area. Get started.
